Posted on March 15, 2010If you are confused about the resolution of high definition then read on because I'm about to explain all about it. HD Telly is much better quality than normal tv with up to 5 times more detail.
What does High Definition mean? - The hd brand was developed to help shoppers buy new tv’s with the hd standard. If you see the logo on the tv, its capable of handling hd pictures.
What are the different types of hd?
The high definition signal or hd for sort is available in three flavors;
- 720p – has 720 horizontal lines that make up your tv picture
- 1080i – has 1080 horizontal lines, the i represents interlaced. This is used in america for most hd transmissions. Each frame is made up of two fields, this means they can show 1080 lines of information per frame.
- 1080p – Is the best possible hd picture, it has 1080 lines of horizontal resolution. The total resolution is 1920 x 1080.
Sky broadcasts in all resolutions, so if your tv is 720p or 1080p you will still get a much better higher resolution picture.
Is my tv high definition ready?
Well I can tell you how to check, just look for the HD logo, it will be somewhere on the tv set, normally on the front. If you can’t see it anywhere have a look at you instruction manual, it will tell you everything you need to know, and hopefully you will have the 1080p – as that is the very best possible quality.
I have hd, can I see hd programs?
No, well not really. You still need to have a hd decoder, this might be built into your tv in the form of hd freeview. I’m not sure how many programs you can get with freeview but its not that many. If you subscribe to sky hd, you will be given a free hd box and can watch 40 hd channels.

My family has been a sky customer for many years. We have the full tv package which is over £40 per month. Sky constantly are showing their HD box adverts constantly. Sky always offer brand new customers their best deals. When will sky start offering their long term customers something special? Personally I think they should start by offerig their long term customers their HD channels for no extra charges per month.
