A major growth program for us was sped up by the purchase in 1988 of the Tip Top chain. In 1989, the Medicare chain was bought enlarging our store base to over 650. In July 2001 we were bought by Dutch beauty and health chain, Kruidvat Beheer BV who sold its retail interests to ASW in October 2002.
We are the UK's second-biggest beauty and fitness retailer now operating over nine hundred stores in Britain , Scotland, Wales, Northerly Eire and the Republic of Eire . We now have 226 in-store drugstores.
Our purpose is to be the very best in everyday accessible beauty and have a commitment to bringing creativity and the newest styles and trends to each high st in England and Southern Eire at superb costs. Each store has a perfume offer and in July 2010 we said our design to launch The Scent Shop, shop inside shop ideas in 10 stores. Over 220 stores have drugstores with chemist consulting rooms. We presently have nineteen stores with nurse hospitals offering health checks. Superdrug is the sole high st retailer with its own team of nurses and in Jan 2010 asserted plans to be the 1st high st retailer to supply HIV testing on the high st.
After a 10 month campaign lobbying the United Kingdom Executive to chop the VAT on rubbers we celebrated a successful end result to this campaign in the 2006 Budget when the Chancellor slashed the VAT on prophylactics from 17.5 percent to 5 %. We continue to lobby the governing body to cut back the VAT on tanning lotion as an element of our campaign to generate funds and awareness for cancer of the skin and in July 2010 we said plans to finish charges on non-public prescriptions.
In the previous six years we have worked with a bunch of charities including Prince's Trust, Institute of Cancer Research, Teen Cancer Trust, NSPCC and Cancer Research UK. Since 2006 we have raised over £1m for our charity partners.
