Additional information about Currys
Currys is an electrical retailer in the UK and Eire and is owned by Dixons. It specialises in selling electronics and home gadgets, with 296 superstores and 74 high st stores.
Their annual sales in 2003 / 04 were £1,753 million and £1,854 million in 2004 / 05. Now the store which has the highest turnover is in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol. Other major stores are found in Wednesbury ( north of Birmingham, just off Junction 9 of the M6 ), Fosse Park, Leicester, Teesside Park ( Stockton-on-Tees ), Gateshead, New Malden and Croydon. The largest store apropos size is Wednesbury.
New stores have just been opened in Solihull, Newport ( on the Isle of Wight ), Chorley, Canterbury, Ashford, Sudbury, Livingston and in New Malden. In Apr 2006, it was announced that Dixons stores ( except in Eire ) would be rebranded as "Currys.digital", taking the total to 551 stores. In Eire, the Currys brand continued to be only exploited for large-format stores, with Dixons kept on the key streets. Nevertheless in August 2008, the Dixons stores in Eire were rebranded as Currys,[1] like Britain move, but without the ".digital" suffix and with a new Currys emblem. Some stores in Great Britain are twin stamped with the P.C World name.
Currys was set up in 1884 by Henry Curry ( born in Leicester in 1850 ), when he started to build cycles full time in a shed at the back of his garden at 40 Painter Street, Leicester, England.[3] He opened his first shop in 1888 at 271 Belgrave Gate, Leicester. In 1890 he moved to larger grounds at 297 Belgrave Gate, then in 1901 to 286-288 Belgrave Gate. The company was put on a correct financial footing in 1897 when Henry formed a collusion with his boys, calling the company H Curry & Boys.
The business kept on growing and floated on the exchange in 1926. By this time the shops sold a good spread of products including cycles, toys, radios and gramophones. Currys pulled out of cycle making in 1932 when they closed their Leicester factory but continued to retail Hercules bikes ( badged as Currys ) until the 1961s. Currys was taken over by Dixons in 1985 but maintained its separate brand identity. Before the Dixons re-branding, the chain contained just one or two little town centre stores compared with its much bigger number of massive out-of-town superstores. The stores are a mix of display products and self-service sections. Patrons can now reserve and collect products, advocating that products can be reserved online, then checked and bought at the local retail outlet.
It was announced on 17 Jan 2008, by John Clare, the Group Boss that when the leases on the leftover 'Currys high st ' stores expire, it is unlikely the leases will be renewed, thus the stores will be closed at the earliest opportunity. In Britain , Currys purchased a new brand, and slogan "We Can Help". The trademark was a red typeset on a dark blue background but this was later modified to white text.
Britain web site carries the new trademark, the Eire internet site used to have the old emblem until late 2011.The UK adverts now also carry the new symbol.
